BLOG 101: Branding Blogs (Part 1)

I know most of you would be excited to set up your own blog site and get into the blogging community. But one thing that many of us do is to know the basics needed to start your own blog. Yes, blogs are the reflection of who the blogger the blogger is, if it is run by an individual. It  should also show a certain "branding" for those corporate and partnership blogs.

Branding should reflect on your personality and lifestyle. However, there are certain things that should be considered when choosing the brand for your blog. Branding is the same when companies name their product (individually or multiple items) that would leave an impression on  consumers. Brands differ with the type and target market, and as much as possible wholesome in nature so the general public can see, hear, or read about them.

Starting at the most important element of brand is the brand name which will represent the blog as a whole. This name will also be an identification for events, archiving, and projects. Remember to choose a name that would be "eternal", because you want a brand that will last a very long time, even at the point of merging or collaboration will still be identifiable with your market.

Brand names should be as much as possible short yet leaves an impression. This is where you can play with words to create an unusual word yet readers would remember them. You can use the formula adjective + noun for the brand. For example:

Wandering Writer
Practical Moms Blog
Insatiable Foodie

Another formula you can do is the noun + description, which you make use of short description about yourself that should never exceed 5 words. This would be effective for personal , niche  and celebrity blogs. Examples are:

Diana The Amazing Blogstar
Speed Studios: Behind the scenes
AstroKnox Space Adventures

And finally is the freestyle which is very common but when not properly made can cause confusion and also conflicts with existing brands that would bear the same name. This would be a combination of words, an acronym, or a "invented" word which still bear the  nature of the blog. My main blog Manual To Lyf is actually an example, and you can also check out these:

BlogLynks
The Amazing World of Willard the Geek
Cut the Craft

When you first start your own blog, I guess you already have an idea what you want to call it, or how people should remember it. So naming can be easy to do given you have already thought about it, but do review your brand name again for any similarities with other blog or websites or even actual brands that can get you in trouble.

DO also check your Brand name which can either be offensive (racist, sexist, discriminating) which can be attacked because of the name and its contents. It would not be good to have budding blog to get a lot of reports about content and titles. To make things simple, just have good clean fun.

Now you have your BRAND, now we can take you to the other ways of branding your blog to readers and even potential clients. But you might need to take a break first and wait for the next part coming soon.
